Frequently asked questions

Unlike group health insurance plans such as those you get through an employer or union, Individual & Family plans are individual health insurance plans that you apply for on your own.

These health insurance plans are designed to give you and/or your family members access to comprehensive healthcare coverage, whether or not you’re working.

In New York, you can get affordable health insurance for yourself and/or family members through the New York State of Health Marketplace (NYSOH).

Yes, if you are under the age of 65, and live in New York state, you could qualify for individual health insurance on the New York State of Health Marketplace.

One of these affordable health insurance plans could be right for you if you are:

  • Self-employed or a freelancer
  • Recently unemployed or between jobs
  • Working part-time
  • Working full-time for a company that doesn’t provide health insurance benefits
  • Retired before turning 65
  • A student or recent graduate
  • A parent with children who need coverage
  • Pregnant

Yes, in fact you may be surprised to learn just how affordable these plans can be. There are a number of low-cost or no-cost options for individuals, families, and children.

Depending on your income and household size, you may qualify for a plan with a premium as low as $0 and a $0 deductible.

And those who qualify can get financial assistance. So getting affordable health insurance in NYC is a reality.

All Individual & Family plans are required to cover a key set of health benefits, so you can count on getting the care you need to get and stay healthy.

Most plans typically cover:

  • Preventive services such as:
    • annual checkups
    • screenings for diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and hepatitis
    • vaccines such as those for the flu and COVID
  • Hospital care and emergency services
  • Prescription medications
  • Maternity and newborn care
  • Mental health and substance use services
  • Pediatric services including dental and vision coverage for children

These core services are included in all plans. What differs from plan to plan is how much you may pay for them.

There are four types of health insurance plans available in New York through the NY State of Health Marketplace. Choose the plan that best meets your individual needs.

  • Medicaid: this public health insurance program, designed for people with limited income, is funded by the State and federal government.
  • The Essential Plan: this public health insurance program, designed for individuals with lower incomes who don’t qualify for Medicaid, is offered by New York State. You can apply at any time during the year through the NY State of Health Marketplace.
  • Child Health Plus: this public health insurance program, designed for children under the age of 19 in families who do not qualify for Medicaid, is offered by New York State.
  • Marketplace Leaf & Leaf Premier Plans: these private health insurance plans, designed for individuals and family members under the age of 65, are available through the NY State of Health Marketplace.

Having health insurance prepares you for the unexpected. You never know if you’ll need medical care due to an accident or illness. But it’s also about staying healthy all year long.

With an individual or family health insurance plan, you’ll get:

  • Access to preventive care to help catch issues early
  • Financial protection from high medical costs
  • A network of trusted doctors, specialists, and hospitals
  • Peace of mind knowing you and your family are covered
